What are the least Daily News media sources?

We get asked this question a lot, and I can understand why. You hear different government officials asserting the media are against them, or one-sided, or notorious; and indeed, in the event that you take a gander at history, lawmakers from the two gatherings have utilized the media (previously called “the press”) as their foil. It’s a great strategy, but it’s also a dangerous one, since it gives folks the impression that ALL media are untrustworthy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Every day, honest and hard-working journalists do their best to tell the whole story, and they sincerely try to be fair to the facts. And yes, there are also some reporters who are nothing more than biased, partisan hacks, but they are NOT the majority.

Furthermore, that leads me to my reaction—there is no simple method to discover precise, fair-minded (or least biased) Daily News. It is out there to be found, but you may have to use a variety of resources. I utilize a blend of print sources (counting a few papers and magazines that also publish an online edition) and TV/radio sources. I always recommend The Week and Time as two magazines that are generally centrist. If you want to consider what the partisans are saying, I recommend the Nation and Mother Jones from the left, and the Weekly Standard and National Review from the right.I like the New York Times and Washington Post—their sentiment feature writers may lean left, but their Daily News is generally thorough and objective. Similarly, the Wall Street Journal is worth reading— their opinion columnists lean to the right, but their Daily news, especially about business, tends to be very fair and accurate.

On TV, I’m a big fan of Rachel Maddow on MSNBC because she covers stories others do not (and yes, she is a center-leftie, but her show has some excellent guests from both sides of the issues); I also watch Lester Strong on Daily News (very fair reporter & anchor), the long-running Daily News magazine “60 Minutes” on CBS, andsome of the news shows like "Forefront" on PBS. Radio-wise, I have several local Daily News stations in my market (Boston), but I’m also a fan of NPR’s “All Things Considered”— again, very fair to the facts and they cover all sides of the issues with in-depth reporting. There are others, but you get the idea— look around, and do your homework: find reporters whose work is respected, and sources that cover both sides. Don’t avoid the partisan sites— just be aware they are only offering one side of the issue, and seek out the other side so that you can be better informed. It may take some work to find accurate information, but again, I assure you it does exist, and it’s waiting for you to find it, and put it to good use!
